One of the biggest myths in gardening is that you need full sun to create stunning containers.
Some of our favorite planters live in areas that only receive morning sun or dappled light, proving that texture, foliage, and thoughtful repetition can be just as impactful as nonstop blooms.
Today we’re sharing how we designed our latest part shade and full shade containers on our Zone 6A terrace—and why creating a cohesive color palette across different light conditions makes the entire garden feel intentional.
Rather than treating our shade containers as completely separate from our sunny ones, we like to repeat key colors and textures throughout the space.
Even when the plant selections change to accommodate lower light, repeating similar hues creates visual flow across the terrace.

The result is a collection that feels connected from every angle.
One of our containers sits beneath an Alpen Glow Japanese maple and receives morning sun followed by shade for most of the day.
To complement that setting, we combined flowering annuals with dramatic foliage plants.
The combination echoes the colors of our nearby full-sun containers while remaining perfectly suited for part shade conditions.
If there’s one plant you’ll notice repeated throughout our shade containers, it’s Pink Chablis Lamium.
Its silver foliage brightens darker spaces and provides incredible contrast against colorful flowers and Japanese maples.
An added bonus? In our garden it’s hardy, so once the season ends we transplant it into landscape beds where it continues to thrive beneath trees and shrubs.
Our shadiest planter features a beautiful Mikawa Yatsubusa Japanese maple as the centerpiece.

One surprising lesson we’ve learned is that sweet potato vines often behave better in shade than they do in full sun, where they can quickly become oversized and dominate a container.

When planting annual containers, we like to incorporate a premium slow-release fertilizer into the soil at planting time.
Many controlled-release fertilizers become more active as temperatures warm, helping provide nutrients steadily throughout the growing season.
Because these containers sit in part shade, we also adjust our drip irrigation to provide moisture without overwatering. Trees planted within mixed containers often benefit from dedicated irrigation so neighboring annuals don’t compete for water.

With appropriately sized containers and careful watering, these trees can provide years of beauty while serving as dramatic living centerpieces.
For winter, we protect container-grown maples from harsh winds by moving them into a sheltered location once dormant.
