How to Open a Pondless Waterfall in Spring + Add a Spillway Bowl

If you have a pondless waterfall, spring is when everything comes back to life.

After a long winter, water features can look… rough. Leaves, debris, and a little bit of wear are all part of the process. But with the right cleanup and a few thoughtful upgrades, they can become one of the most beautiful focal points in your garden again.

In this post, we’re walking through exactly how we:

  • Opened our pondless waterfall for the season
  • Cleaned and refreshed the entire system
  • Installed a brand new spillway bowl
  • Planted around it to blend everything seamlessly into the garden

If you’ve been thinking about adding a water feature or upgrading an existing one, this is a really good place to start.

Spring Pondless Waterfall Opening: What to Expect

After winter, your water feature is essentially dormant.

The first step is bringing it back to life.

Here’s the basic process:

1. Remove Debris by Hand

Before anything else, larger debris like leaves and sticks need to be removed manually. It’s tedious, but it makes a huge difference before rinsing.

2. Rinse and Clean Everything

The entire feature gets rinsed from top to bottom to remove buildup from winter.

3. Pump Out Old Water

Starting fresh with clean water helps everything look better immediately and keeps the system healthier.

4. Reset the Rocks and Edges

Winter can shift things around slightly. This is the time to tuck everything back into place so it looks natural again.

By the end of this process, the transformation is dramatic. Clear water, clean stone, and everything ready for the growing season.

Adding a Spillway Bowl (Our New Favorite Feature)

This year, we added something new: a spillway bowl.

And honestly, it completely elevates the space.

Why Add a Spillway Bowl?

  • Adds movement and sound in a smaller footprint
  • Creates a layered water feature (not just one focal point)
  • Fits easily into existing garden beds
  • Requires very little maintenance

What’s Underneath It?

The bowl sits on top of a hidden reservoir system:

  • Aqua Basin (45): holds water below ground
  • Pump (AquaSurge 2000): circulates water
  • Autofill valve: keeps water levels consistent
  • Service access: allows easy maintenance

All of this is tucked underground so visually, it just looks like a natural part of the garden.

Choosing the Right Location

Placement matters more than you might think.

We chose this spot because:

  • It was close to a power source
  • It fit naturally within the existing border
  • It allowed the bowl to “nestle” into surrounding plants

The goal is always the same:
👉 Make it feel like it belongs there

Not like something that was added later.

How to Plant Around a Water Feature

This is where everything really comes together.

Once the hardscape is done, planting softens the edges and makes it feel like a real garden space.

Our Planting Strategy

We focused on:

1. Layering heights

  • Tall: Hostas (Empress Woo), Japanese maple
  • Mid: Brunnera, hellebore
  • Low/spilling: Geraniums

2. Foliage contrast

  • Red: Japanese maple
  • Gold: Aralia (Sun King)
  • Blue: Brunnera

3. Light conditions

  • Shade plants near the bowl
  • Sun-tolerant plants toward the front

This specific bed is mostly shade, so choosing the right plants made a big difference in how everything will fill in over time.

A Few Small Design Decisions That Matter

  • Keep access space open for maintenance (we used annuals in that zone)
  • Let plants spill over rocks slightly for a natural look
  • Divide existing plants to reuse what you already have
  • Avoid overplanting right away and let things grow in

Right now it may look a little sparse.

But by mid-season, everything fills in and softens beautifully.

Maintenance (It’s Easier Than You Think)

One of the best parts about this setup:

You don’t have to do much.

  • Autofill valve keeps water levels steady
  • Pump is accessible if needed
  • Shadier location reduces algae growth
  • Moss naturally develops over time

This is one of those features that gets better as the season goes on.

Final Thoughts

Opening the pondless waterfall each spring has become one of our favorite seasonal resets in the garden.

And adding the spillway bowl this year took it to another level.

It’s one of those upgrades that:

  • Feels intentional
  • Looks high-end
  • And blends right into the space

Now we just let the plants grow in and enjoy it all season long.
